UK Living

Some household things common in the UK:

The shower. The idea of keeping water in the shower/tub area does not apply. 99% of the flats we saw last year had this arrangement. I've been to some hotels on business travel this year that don't even have the 1/4 wall that you see here. I just don't get it...

This is a large one, we were told. I have to admit, we buy a lot less food and throw away much less. But yes, we hit the grocery store 2-3 times per week.

Washer and dryer... All in one. Yes, a novel idea. When we moved here, we thought the US was ages behind the UK on this front. Well... according to Beth (who I have to admit, does the laundry), the average load takes 4 hours and still comes out damp.

Weekend in Bath

We've been here before - for about 2 hours on a bus tour that we did last May. 2 hours had given us time to see the actual Roman Baths and nothing else. We knew it was definitely worth a weekend trip back.

We arrived yesterday morning and checked into to Cranleigh House B&B. http://www.cranleighguesthouse.com/ During the day, we went to the Jane Austen Centre http://www.janeausten.co.uk/, saw the Pulteney Bridge, Royal Circus, and Royal Crescent just to name a few places. Dinner was at a jazz restaurant. Today we treated ourselves to a real thermal bath spa that was opened recently. http://www.thermaebathspa.com/ We spent two hours going between pools (both indoor and outdoor) and several steam rooms.

Why the blank face?

He's real...

A year ago today...

...we left our family, friends, and all that was familiar to move across the "pond." We landed with 8 bags, a street map of London, a lot of excitement, and no place to live. After a few weeks of searching, we found the flat that was to become our home. And, after a year, it has finally become just that: home. We return from all of our trips with the anticipation of being back in London. We even smile at the "characters" around Earl's court. And though our flat is small, and cramped, and the couch is uncomfortable, and the sink leaks... it's still ours :)

It has been a wonderful year full of traveling, new friends, and a lot of life lessons. We still miss CT and everyone there, and we look forward to being back with you all soon. But we're thankful that London has been so kind to us.

Winchester

We can check another UK town off the list. We took the train to Winchester yesterday. Winchester, in Southern England was formerly the capital of England during the 10th century. It's famous for a Cathedral (we're finding that to be a theme of English towns), a castle, and a mill that still functions today. http://www.visitwinchester.co.uk/

London weekend

After waiting for several hours for the plumber to show up (and he didn't), we decided to head to the London Zoo on Saturday. Once there, and while standing in line for tickets, we noticed an ominous looking rain cloud coming to spoil what had appeared to be, a perfect weather day. Rather than seeing wet zebras and letting zebras see wet Noris, we left. On the walk back, we snapped a few great shots of the sun-shower.

Near the zoo, is Camden Town - several streets/markets specializing in goth and club scene items, and other items that people in their silver years would probably not purchase. http://www.camdenlock.net/

On Saturday night we went with several friends to a Tex-Mex place not too far from where we live called Cactus Blue http://www.cactusblue.co.uk/

Just as the rain was stopping.

One of the locks near Camden... if you look close enough, you'll see a rainbow over the brick building.

Anna Kareninininininina...

Last Sunday was the first meeting of the "London Ladies Book Club" started by Kelly and Katy. We were given our first "assignment," which is to read the first 3 parts of Anna Karenina, by Tolstoy. Nothing like starting light! Haha. Well, I guess it's listed as one of the best novels ever for a reason. So far so good. I'm really enjoying it. And the best part is that in a few weeks I get to meet up with a great group of girls for an afternoon to "discuss" it.

What's even better is that we will also be exchanging other finished books with each other. Which should make Rino happy. Anyone who knows me, knows that I devour books and give lots of our hard-earned $$ to Waterstones.

P.S. I realize I've been a bit neglectful of this blog lately. Mostly because I've started a second blog that is design related, and it's taking up more time than expected. Luckily, Rino is great at keeping this updated.

Rare sighting

On the way home just now... I saw something that made me do a double take. Despite the fact that London Transport, in my opinion, is far superior to NYC's... this is still a rare sight:
